The World’s Largest Underwater Restaurant

The Hurawalhi Island Resort in the Maldives has just installed the world’s largest underwater restaurant, which is bound to offer breathtaking views of the sea floor, alongside many delicious dishes, starting this August, when it will be opened.

The restaurant was built around a steel structure, complemented by a transparent, acrylic dome, which will allow diners to see marine life passing by as they savor their dishes. Seating up to 30 guests, Hurawalhi Island Resort’s new dining room is located near a shallow coral reef on the Lhaviyani Atoll, with the impact on the surrounding environment being minimal.

Designed by MJ Murphy, an architectural firm from Auckland, the transparent dome was constructed by Fitzroy Engineering. The structure is 22.5 meters (74 feet) long and weighs an incredible 410 tons, with 10 months of incredible effort put into finishing the project.

You should know that diners will be able to access the restaurant from a hut above the water, which connects to the restaurant via a 13-meter (43-foot) spiral staircase. To be honest, the food is actually prepared onshore and shipped over through a specially-designed dumbwaiter; so, this is more like a dining room than an actual restaurant.
