Jardin de Balata garden paradise
The Jardin de Balata - Martinique has thousands of varieties of tropical flowers and plants; its owner is a dedicated horticulturist. There are shaded benches from which to take in the mountain views and a plantation-style house furnished with period furniture. An aerial path gives visitors an astounding, bird's-eye view of the gardens and surrounding hills, from wooden walkways suspended 50 feet in the air. There is no restaurant, though beverages are for sale. This worthy site shows why Martinique is called the Island of Flowers. It's 15 minutes from Fort-de-France, in the direction of St-Pierre. You can order anthuriums and other tropical flowers to be delivered to the airport from the mesmerizing flower boutique here.
This private botanical garden just outside Fort-de-France is home to a staggering number of begonias, bromeliads, bamboo and about 300 different types of palm trees.
Tropical flowers excite the senses with their spectacular beauty and the richness in the intense hues of their blooms. They have a unique fragrance all their own, and there is an exoticness in their forms that capture the imagination, as well as many an artist's brush and a photographer's lens. Martinique is indeed a tropical paradise of exotic flowers in every shade of the rainbow.
Le Jardin de Balata is open daily from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, except during the month of September when the garden is closed for renovation. Admission is charged. Allow for a few hours to visit and fully appreciate this lovely tranquil oasis.
